I run up against this quite often…I model the exterior, and as a result of how that has to be accomplished I cannot use the same model for the inside renders.

Case in point…the WIP home I’ve been posting…because I cannot change the eave length for a couple sections of roof, (the program simply won’t let me) they project into the house so that I have a huge section of roof visible in the kitchen/dining area, and I cannot simply turn off the roof because then there is no roof visible outside in the interior renders, which looks odd to say the least.

Modeling the stairs for an interior shot but there is a large section of exterior wall that is visible directly above the stairs that I cannot modify or the outside renders will be off.

Always this equates to simply being easier to do a ‘save as’ and create a 2nd file for all the interior renders, modifying the outside as needed to clear up the issues inside.

Is this normal to work this way? saving separate files for every job? Admittedly, my machine starts to ‘lag’ pretty bad once I start adding interior details so using exterior/interior files makes sense from that perspective…

The real issue here is…neither views are accurate this way…if I use an exterior only file, then there is no ‘life’ visible through the windows…no kitchen, furniture, fixtures and appliances, etc

I’ve come to learn that 3d modeling is much more diorama-like than actually modeling a house in 3d…very illusory if you want to work efficiently. only very simple houses seem to work as combined exterior/interior files

And, holy hell…if I had to train employees to run this software I would switch software instead.

Have you tried / select roof / right click / convert to Surfaces ?

    This allows for independent adjustments.

heh, thanks Jack…at first I was like “oh! Hey!” and rushed off to give it a try.

Converted to surface…had to readjust the thickness parameters for my custom ‘flat’ roof afterwards, not a big deal I guess.

Rushed back inside the model only to find the roof eaves were not visible anymore, Yay! but a section of gable wall surface that had been hidden by the eaves was now glaringly visible. Oh no!

The thing here is…to model that particular section of roof, the only way I could get the roof’s gable ‘walls’ to display correctly for an exterior render was to use gable surface…gable walls wouldn’t ‘extend to roof’ for some reason…

So there is no way to modify this section except to save as interior model and delete the roof instead, and this is totally separate from the problem wall near the stairs I originally posted about. *heavy sigh*

    Damned if I do and damned if I don’t I guess…

A bit hard to determine the exact issue your having but a wall will still interact (extend) to a roof that has been converted to surfaces.

Two things are required, when you convert to surface a pop up appears and you must select Suface Type as > ‘ROOF’ because a wall with interact with it, (extend to roof).

When you adjust the roofs at a wall that was extending to gable, you must make sure the wall is free and clear of the adjoining ‘lower’ roof, so it can extend up to the roof gable you want it to.

Once the wall extends, you can drag the other roof to just touch it , almost’.  If you go to far, the gable wall will disappear because it cannot ‘read’ / ‘see’ / interact with the upper gable.

But as I say , this can get touchy based on the layout.

maybe you need a computer with more firepower:) I did and don’t regret it.

I think it can be done its just very tedious work and you have to adjust it down to the fraction of an inch. and as for your last comment i don’t quite agree i (soon after i started) was kinda upset with the software to as i to had multiple problems with it.. I sent files to cadsoft because they just crashed  my system, I did a gotomeeting with Nicholas Cudmore concerning a project i was working on that crashed my system every time i tried to do a render or VR. Nicholas worked on it and got it to the point where i could at least finish the project(and a thanks to Nick for it i really appreciated it.). nevertheless i was disgusted with the software and decided to look for something else. (cause the roofs didn’t want to work, the terrain was a problem and a couple other things) So this is how it went: 1 some of them were that complicated you would have had to have a college education just to figure out how to find the correct tools you wanted to use (as a bed for example) 2 Most of them were connected to online power house some where and they restricted you to a couple renders a month (think 15) 3 And most of them were very expensive.

So back to Cadsoft and then i tried really hard. i did multiple houses that were just play, for the practice was what i needed and i found out most of my problems with the software went away, and i was the one that had been doing it wrong in the first place. I’m not saying this to stomp on your toes I’m just saying Please don’t give up on it the more new mansions you do the better you’ll get. I used to to not like Envisioneer but now i do.

I’m working on my first million dollar house in 3D and it has some crazy roofs so maybe i better watch myself because i might be pulling out hair soon to 🙂

Hair pulling comes with the territory. Do something out of the ordinary & expect challenges.
    But I’m still not bald!

SDS, are you sure your interior stairs are in the right place. Or do you mean that you have the exterior surface lowered to cover floor system and you can see out through the wall??

    SDS,

You didn’t mention lighting and if you don’t have lighting, no it won’t show. Even though i think Jack’s right and it’s your glass.

I had steak for dinner last night…it was good.

Rumors abound that there will be snow soon…somewhere.

Dogs can lick their noses too…

So much for trying to get an honest answer to a very valid question…but hey, you guys continue with your completely off-topic conversation about world-design

    Thank you Cadsoft

I apologize it was me that started another conversation on here. And If you’ll tell me how to, i’ll delete my off topic posts.

Post something I can see that shows your problem. Written description is inadequate.

    SDS,

This is what Merv told me the one time i posted a problem and and tried to explain it with words. He said a pic is worth a thousand words.

So at least take a couple snippets and put it on so we can see the problem.
