Please disregard this post. I couldn’t find the answer in the user guide before I posted then I went back afterward and saw that I need to use the  BIM import routine. Thanks.

Using BIM import works but you can also ‘load’ a file with the objects you want to add to the new catalog. Just drag them into the drawing area and save the bld file.
Then open that file in the program with the new catalog set up and all you have to do is File>Catalogs>Save Element to Catalog.
Then click on the element you want to save from the ‘drawing area’.
