I have become an advocate for using SketchUp for creating new Elements for my library. On the other hand I have run into  some anomalies that I need your help with.

The first has to do with the ability to define which type of element you wish the object to be. As a for instance you can only define a major category. Doors or Interior Furniture but not sub-categories such as “Entry Door” or “Dining Room Table”. While this does not preclude the insertion of the object, it does have an adverse affect when you then try to add the element to your catalog.

In the case of “Interior Furniture” I selected “Save Element To Catalog”.

I then selected the Dining Table Set that I had imported from SketchUP.

    The following dialog then appeared”:

It gave me no option as to whee to add the object in the Catalog, I therefore only new from my original import of the object as an element that it was “Internal Furniture”.

As a result and it appears to be the case for all “Internal Furniture” it ended up as a single ungrouped child element under “Bedroom Furniture” see below it is the EnhancedTable”.

I then tried to add the follow arch as an “Opening”, however since this was not a choice target location on import I brought it in as a “Doors” element.

Unlike with the “Interior Furniture” when I added this element to the Element Catalog it did come in under doors but it created a new “Doors” root group within “Doors” as shown below.

I renamed the first root group to something meaningful and then re-imported the same object to “Doors” again as a “New Custom Element”. Again it created yet another “<root node>” .

While I was able to correct the cataloging problem in the “Element Manager” by draggin and dropping elements into their appropriate element folders. This would not have been necessary if I had been able to Import the original object into the appropriate sub category.

Is there a better way to import a SketchUp element file into the appropriate location in the library or did I miss something.

If this is the only way to work at the moment. I think that the Object Import Wizard needs to be modified to allow imported elements to be more fully categorized on import based on not just parent type but also as a properly named and located child type.

I believe I understand your issue. If you are adding the object using the “Import Object Wizard” you get the results you described. However there is an alternate method…
Go the object category you want to add it to in the catalog i.e. Dressers in the furniture catalog, right click on “Dressers” and select “Add Element”. A box pops up with several options. At the bottom of the list you will see “Custom Block”.  Select that and click OK. You will be prompted to select a file, then just follow it through. You should get your desired result.
