User Interaction: for improving ease of use and general productivity

A new onscreen controller brings all frequently used viewing and navigation tools together in one place, providing an easy to use, exciting motion simulation experience. Similar to a handheld video game controller, the Navigator allows you to switch between 2D and 3D, zoom and pan, and navigate in 3D using direct-response technology.

  • Roll the interactive trackball with your mouse in any direction to zoom and pan in 2D, or to move and rotate in 3D
  • Quickly toggle between 2D Plan view, 3D Camera view, and 3D
QuickViews with a single mouse click.
  • In 2D Plan view, quickly access Zoom and Pan controls without
your mouse leaving the control area
  • In 3D Camera view, quickly access the Zoom, Pan, Look Around,
Fly Around and Walk Around tools
  • In 3D QuickView, choose between nine preset orthogonal views
for instant orthographic viewing, then use the 3D navigation controls
to further align your viewing position.

Sketchup Export
You can now save your Envisioneer drawing to a Sketchup (SKP) file. Coupled with the existing SKP import feature, this provides a round trip exchange of information between products. Being able to export to SKP means that you can now save your building models to the 3D Warehouse. You can even save your model to Google Earth and position it on an actual building lot!

Backward Compatibility
While working in Envisioneer version 8 you can save your project in version 7.2 format, making the transition from the previous version easier and permitting compatibility with other Cadsoft products such as Envisioneer Express 7.2. Cadsoft will continue to offer backward compatibility in future versions of Envisioneer as well.

New Startup Template Selection
When starting a new project you can now choose the template that you want to use for the new project. The New dialog displays all templates saved in your Templates folder, and you can also browse for other templates on your system. Templates are beautifully presented with thumbnail images for easy selection, and you can even preview the template's settings.

Other features include:

  • Create additional template sub-folders for better organization
  • Navigate easily through template folders using Back and Home buttons
  • Associate photos with templates to make them easily identifiable
  • Associate the last saved thumbnail view with a template
  • View the program settings assigned to a template directly within the New dialog

Navigation Options
New navigation settings let you precisely control the way you Zoom, Pan, Walk and Fly Around, making these tools more comfortable to use. Tailor your navigation to the way you like to work by adjusting your mouse response and using your keyboard when desired.

  • Speed Adjustment
Adjust your rate of motion to make navigation slower or faster using a simple slide control.

  • Motion Response
You now have the option of turning off the continuous navigation mode that was available in version 7 in favor of an instant response mode.  Using the instant method of navigation, you can position your camera and target instantaneously with single sweeping mouse movements and orient yourself in relation to the model with greater precision.

  • Arrow Key Navigation
You can now use arrow keys to pan in 2D, or to walk and look around in 3D.

View Filter Enhancements
The updated View Filter has introduced a new control that allows you to lock the display and/or selection states of each component in your 3D model.   You can lock the visibility and selection state of your objects so when you display all/none or select all/none you can isolate objects that you do not want affected. This also replaces the existing “Lock Framing” checkbox in exchange for a more robust system that can be used for all objects.

BIM Design for advancements in Building Information Modeling

Automatic Platform Gable Ends
A new setting in roof properties lets you choose an actual wall to display beneath the gabled ends of the roof which is independent of the bearing wall below. With no drawing necessary, platform-framed walls are created for you instantly, saving tons of time and effort. And because they are separate walls, inserting gable end windows and openings is a snap.

Import Survey Data
A triangulated irregular network (TIN) terrain mesh can now be generated using a variety of methods to accurately represent the topography of your building site. Choose from a wide variety of formats including CSV, XYZ, TXT and many others.  Once selected, the file can be previewed, scaled and rotated before placing it into your project. Once placed, additional features can be placed on the terrain including manually placed survey points, paths, fills and other landscaping items.

Insert Spot Points
The new Spot Point command allows you to manually insert specific points by specifying X,Y,Z coordinates.  Using the commander you can change the Z coordinate to elevate each point as you insert them.  You can also select on each inserted point and move them by dragging or access additional editing commands to move by distance, copy or delete.  Access the Spot Point's properties to change its Elevation and update the terrain mesh and contours accordingly.

Contours can be generated accurately from either imported survey data or manually inserted points. The contours are automatically annotated with elevation levels as well.  You can adjust specific variables such as the start level and the contour spacing interval in order to achieve the desired result.  You can also decide to display or not display the labels and assign a specific text style to the label itself.

Dynamic Dimension Improvements
Additions and improvements to onscreen wall dimensions make wall editing quicker and easier.  A dimension and adjustment controls associated with the wall length allow for the following dimension enhancements:

  • You can click on this dimension and edit the wall's length dynamically. New arrows in the Edit Dimension dialog let you specify the wall end that you want to adjust. Any walls attached to the edited wall adjust with it automatically.
  • Walls with a free end can now be adjusted easier to exact length
  • Duplicate dimensions at wall ends have been eliminated, creating a more clean and simple display.

Elevate Preview
When using the Elevate tool, clicking the new Apply button lets you preview the element's new elevation in your model before closing the dialog.  This helps you to determine if the elevation is correct while the Elevate tool is still active and saves valuable time.

Boise BC Framer Integration
Envisioneer 8 now saves files directly to Boise BC Framer for analysis of engineered floor joints, beams and structure.

Sales Presentations: For enhancements is visualization to help sell more projects

Ambient Lighting
Ambient lighting is a general illumination that comes from all directions in a room.  With the added ambient lighting control on, additional illumination is introduced into the scene to smooth out dark areas and improve overall image quality.

Grayscale Rendering
Create high contrast renderings and save on printing costs by opting for grayscale output in your rendering settings.  Simply turn on the grayscale option in the rendering dialog and your final image will be rendered to a grayscale image file. Also great for cover sheets and images for use in working drawings.

Sun Color
The new sun color option allows you to adjust your sun color to affect your rendered image.  Simply adjust your slider to change the sun color and when you render the project, you will see the influence on how the sun light affects the scene.  Great for showing early morning or sunset environments.

Additional Presentation Enhancements

Soft Shadows
This new option in the raytracing settings permits a closer approximation of reality, greatly improving image quality.

Rendering Speed Increase
The radiosity and raytrace process is now up to 5 times faster and makes use of multi-processors.

You can now save individual animation frames to disk for greater output control.  These can then be used in other animation generation programs of choice.

Quantity Takeoff for increased accuracy and flexibility in reporting

Wall Variable Information Added
Walls can now publish additional information for use in your quantity reports for a more accurate and flexible material takeoff.  Added information includes the following options:

  • You can specify whether you want a wall material to be measured from the interior or exterior surface of the wall in addition to the center line
  • The portion of the exterior veneer that is dropped down to cover the rim joist is now quantified
  • You can now choose whether or not you want openings to be ignored when wall materials are being quantified

The roof object now publishes additional information that can be extracted directly into your quantity reports for increased accuracy..  New variables include the following:

  • Length of hip roof edge - for accurately measuring and reporting hip shingles and ridge material
  • Length of fascia edges - for measuring and reporting of starter strip, fascia material and other fascia related information
  • Length of valleys - for measuring and quantifying valley flashing
  • Length of gable edges  - for extracting information regarding sloped gable  and barge information
  • Roof opening area - for measuring or omitting materials relating to the roof openings.

Copying Assemblies
Existing assemblies can be copied when creating new assemblies.  This copies with it both the associated elements as well as formulas and the newly copied assembly can be altered to suit your needs.

Expanded Report Categories
The existing Furnishings category has been expanded into the following individual categories for defining individual quantity records:

  • Interior and Exterior Furniture
  • Interior and Exterior Accessories
  • HVAC
  • Plumbing
  • Appliances
  • Electronics
  • Equipment

This allows you to expand and define individual formats for each of these categories for increased precision and flexibility in reporting.

Headers can accept Project Manager data
Project Manager variables can now be reported in material report headers including fields such as Project Name, Company, Contact, etc... for improved formatting in your estimates and quotes.

General Report Format Improvements

Alt Codes
Alt Codes can now contain a combination of variables defined by a formula on the Quantity property page, making it possible to include additional information such as the floor location or phase.

Units of Measure
Units of Measure selected on the Quantity property page now incorporate conversion settings for the units, eliminating the need to specify conversion formulas in the assemblies.

Phase and Usage
You can now specify a Phase and Usage for floor, ceiling, roof and wall framing members so that you can sort members according to when, where or how they will be used.

Trim Lengths
Trim and moldings can now be assigned purchased members and therefore are now quantified in the cut list and optimized accordingly.

Construction Documentation for faster production drafting and annotation

Dimension Text Override
You can now override a dimension value in Model View and replace it with any other number or text. This is great for adding additional information to a dimension for the purposes of clarification or providing an instruction regarding a dimension instance.

Revision Clouds
By popular demand, Envisioneer now introduces a Revision Cloud feature.  Simply click a few points to quickly draw a revision cloud around a portion of your drawing you wish to call attention to. You can even apply a hatch pattern to the cloud for added visibility.  Revision Clouds have additional options to control line type, line width, and the size of the arcs that make up the cloud so you can customize exactly how you want the cloud to appear.

New Hatch Patterns Library
The patterns library has been totally revamped for version 8. It now contains a wider variety of hatch patterns, all with a higher degree of quality. New patterns include wood grain, insulation, brick, stone, earth and much more.

Improved PDF File Import
When importing a PDF file containing fonts that are not available on your computer, a dialog will alert you and provide some options for handling this issue. You can choose to rasterize the file so that the text is displayed, or leave vector geometry intact so that you can still snap to linework once the file is inserted. This also permits you to import much larger PDF files than accounted for previously.

Framing and Wall Panelization:  For detailed construction and manufacturing

Automatic Wall Panels
Every framed wall in your model is automatically considered a “panel”, and panel diagrams are generated automatically from your existing wall layout. Panel breaks occur at wall intersections, and you can further break walls to create more panels if desired. Many automated features make panel definition easy, including:

  • Auto Tagging
Walls are tagged automatically as you draw them, creating panels as you go. Set up a tagging system beforehand, or customize tags and panel names afterward. You can add a prefix or suffix, or append location information to panel tags.

  • Auto Break
For quick and precise control of panel lengths use the Auto Break tool to break one or multiple walls into specific lengths.

  • Dynamic Editing
Wall panel lengths can be adjusted dynamically by editing the dynamic dimension that appears along the length of a wall and specifying the wall end that you want to adjust.

Panel Sorting and Viewing
Once you have drawn your walls you can instantly view a list of the wall panels in your project and decide how you would like to number and sort them. You can then preview a framing diagram and schedule for each wall panel in the list.

  • Panel View Side
Specify a default panel view side prior to drawing walls, or flip the view side of individual panels after walls have been drawn.

  • Panel Numbering
Use the panel sorter to automatically number and sort panels according to a set of rules that you specify, or simply move them up and down in the list. Sort panels according to how they are drawn, or in a specific direction.   You can also set up a default set of rules for how your exterior and interior walls are automatically sorted for future projects either globally or also specified by building location..

Panel Annotation and Layout
Customize the content and appearance of wall panel diagrams from one simple dialog, and insert them automatically onto worksheets.

  • Panel Customization
Decide how much information you want displayed in your panel diagrams, and customize the appearance of dimensions, text and schedules.

  • Panel Insertion
Just click a button to automatically insert selected panel diagrams onto worksheets. Insert one panel per sheet or group multiple panels together.

  • Panel Regeneration
Panels have a live link to the original model so that they can be updated if the project is changed.
