Are BIM files exported out of Envsioneer compatable with Revit and other BIM software?
Could somebody tell me if the BIM format is a universal format or an Envisioneer specific format? Thanks!

Hi

Envisioneer can export out to dwg which you could import into Revit. BIM is Envisioneer's format to compile catalog elements together for sharing with other Envisioneer users.

Thanks Chantale. There is more request from our customers to have our product available to Architects to plug into their BIM programs. I use Autodesk 3DS MAX design software to create the 3D models and export a .3ds file to bring into Envisioneer. I'm not sure how I could create 3D models with all the specs, company name, price and comments and be compatible not only to Envisioneer but other BIM programs?

Hi

3DS format should be compatible to most or SKP format is also widely used an importable into most.

Hi Stix,

If I understand you correctly, all I can think of is to isolate your 3DS import into Envisioneer (place only one 3DS file in Envisioneer). Assign it with the information you want it to have including price, company name, comments (not sure what is involved with the 'specs' aspect).

You can assign this information in Quanities tab in the models Properties. I would think you could even customize the assemblies and add specs to include particular parts.

This information would not be available when imported to a new program BUT you could generate a Project Estimate from the Analyze tab. If only the one 3DS model was in the bld, this Estimate would include all the information you have assigned in the Quanities tab.

The estimate could be generated as a Excel file and when you send the file to share, you could include the Excel file.  This information would then need to be 'assigned' in the new program and or they could use the one / or more Excel files to represent details of those  objects you have inserted.

I don't know if this helps, some more details from you may get some better responses.

I have to agree that to make Envisioneer BIM really useful on larger projects it needs to work with both Archicad and Revit.

As I understand it there is a "bridge" available between Revit and Archicad so why not Envisioneer?

Thanks Jack, that is a good idea and I may go that direction.

From my own seach on Google there is an organization at http://buildingsmart.com/ that is trying to get a universal format for BIM objects. I could not find a plug-in for MAX that would export an IFC file that they talk about.

I will most likely export a .3DS file with material textures in the form of jpg's and include our PDF cutsheets to give them the specifications of the product.

If Revit and Architcad want to change thier programs to conform with Envisioneer standards, that is fine with me , but I don't want Envisioneer changing to accomodate the others standards.

I can't believe how many negative comments I heard about Autocad and Revit at this years IBS, where I spent time talking to builders and architects.

If Architects want to take advantage of the abilities that Envisioneer has, they can just go out and buy a copy. It would be both a user friendly and pocketbook friendly move on thier part.

Don't change Envisioneer to meet lower standards.

Each BIM product has its advantages and disadvantages and I would like to see each product working in its own way... but a bridge so that users of other BIM systems can share data more effectivly would be great.

I am loving the OrthoGraph software for the ipad.

The floorplans can be exported to ArchicAD or sketchup.

Would be great if it would export to Env 7.
