You can pick on it in 3D view and then switch back to plan view and do your stuff.

Try picking the adjoining eave lines and then hold the shift key and pick the gable, this sometimes works.

I think this may be something that needs more attention by the developer gurus. It' s like draging the mouse and picking multiple objects, right clicking Won' t bring up properties and the way to do it is select all the objects and then holding the shift key un-select an entity and then select it back again and only then can a property command be selected.
