I recently ran into a problem with walls.  Mostly exterior walls.  If I chhsse say an 8" exterior wall with stone veneer, I get a wall with stone veneer (on both the interior and exterior).  Whan I change one side, I change both. Any solutions for this?

Hi Scott

Select the wall that has stone on both sides, and then right click and choose Properties. On the Appearance tab of the Walls dialog box it allows you to define both the Exterior and left and right sides of interior walls. You will see each of these listed in the component list. Highlight each one separately to ensure they are set to the appropriate materials.

What else may cause this problem?

1. Are you on version 5.1 or later? I am not sure how earlier versions would have handled wall appearances. If you are on a version earlier than 5 than it may not allow you to have different finishes on either side.

2. Walls understand that they are "exterior" when they meet other walls and totally enclose a space. If your walls don't meet at corners correctly than the outside may be "leaking" into the inside so the software can't determine what is inside and what is outside. Look at your wall corners to ensure there isn't a gap.

Chantal,  I am running Version 6.0.  My design has 4 floors, a basement, a garage mid level an main floor and an attic with 1' high walls.  Would the wall bleeding extend up from the basement or just be limited to a single floor?

To totally enclose a space the walls need to be on the same location. They will not see the walls on the other locations.

Would you mind posting your model so I can take a look at it and offer some suggestions? It is always easier when you can see the model.

Thanks,

How do I get around the file size restriction.  The file is 1.2 MB.

Try "zipping" it. Go to www.winzip.com and download their winzip software - which compresses the file to a smaller size for emailing. They have a free evaluation version.

...I know that there are numerous errors, but I can't see what makes the exteriors of the walls bleed; and the floors disappar; and the roof not work..

Good Afternoon Scott,

I have taken a look at your model as Chantale was not able to because of version conflicts and I was able to find a solution for you.

The reason behind the material issue was because you had the garage walls on their own location but the walls were not closed.  I also had to fix up the walls on the Attic Location as there was a connection problem in the lower corner of the garage walls.  To fix the garage walls issue I duplicate dyour garage walls to a new location and then duplicated them to teh main floor location.  I then lowered only the Garage walls and this resolved the issue.  The reaosn I created a new location was because I needed to have the location above all your other locations so that it would not interfer with your existing locations.  This allows me to duplicate the walls and any element in that wall, like your doors and windows.  If you were to just duplicate teh walls you may lose the doors and windws because they will be interferring with the existing location.  Once I duplicated the walls to teh new location I deleted the Garage Walls and then duplicated the new loation walls to the Main floor.  I then deleted the new location walls and the entire location.

Thanks,
Nick

Nick,  Thanks for the look and the explanation of what I did wrong.  Not real sure I understood it totally.  Actually I tried an experiment by constructing two boxes, one on a basement and the other on a slab.  I drew 4 walls around each.  Of the two adjoining walls, one wall was left the original thickness; the other wall was made to be 1/8" thick with no separation between the walls (I guess I could have redrawn the other wall to be 1/8" thinner to compensate).  The result was no bleeding of the outside wall to the interior for either box.

I have a question regarding the "Building Locations" settings. When I originally added the roof, the roof covered about 2' above the attic walls.  I also had to locate the attic walls, as they appear to have slipped down into the 1st floor walls. I looked at the attic wall attributes and they were set to 0".  By raising them 1' it brought them to the top of the 1st floor wall, but then I had to add 1' to the wall height to meet the roof.  Even the "automatically extend" commend did not work at all locations.  For some reason some gable ends extended to the roof and others did not.  I also noticed that if I save my work and close the program and reopen the program and file, the attic walls appear to have dropped again.  Floors also to rise and drop at will.

I was thinking that I did not properly set up the "Building Locations".  I drew a section of what I wanted and tried to interpret the dimensions requested in the form.  If I make changes to the "Building Location" values after I draw a floor plan, will the floor plan be updated?

Scott,

Having not completely mastered the Commander yet, I find most of my problems end when I overlap the first and last walls, as shown below. Left-click on the overage, right-click, then delete. Don't ask me why, but it works because the perimeter is 'closed'. Your files should stop acting screwy.

Good Morning,

The building Locations should be set up prior to drawing your design, but you can change it afterwards and it will change the position of the walls already in the drawing.

The roof will always go in at the height of the wall specified on that location in the Building Locations.  The roof then has to be dropped by selecting the roof edge that needs to be lowered and then right click and selecting Properties.  You will then go to the Support and Details Tab and change the Support Height of teh roof to be the height that you need, basically the height of the walls in that area.  This should lower the roof down for you.

Thanks,
Nick

Nick,

Thanks, that worked like a charm.  I had been looking for a place to adjust roof height.

I am still having problems getting virew to render using the "True View" comend.  The only desigh I ever got yo render was one of the stock house plans that cane on the CD.  I have a really old ATI video card with only 64 mb of onboard memory.  I hope to upgerade to quadra model real soon as part of my system upgrade.
