I'm getting confused again on how to lock the layer properties in worksheet view. Each time I change the Model view "Export/ Export layer setup" file, my layer settings in worksheet view default to some preset layer properties. Is there an order to doing things here that I'm missing?

Hi Tom,

Export Layer setup is for dwg export to AutoCad, not settings for sheet views.

Sheet view layer settings are in the WorkSheet 'Properties' tab/ top left of screen area.

G'day Tom!
Can you be a little more specific? provide an example?

G'day Jack!
Layering in SmartViews depends on what the user has set in the current loaded .lay file. I'm still waiting for a few refinements in this area:
  • User shouldn't need to have a layer already existing in worksheet mode. If it doesn't exist, Env should be smart enough to create the new layer required . . . .
  • When inserting a SmartView, Env should check what Linetype has been assigned to the Element in it's Properties & use the appropriate linetype (whether 2D or 3D) for it's representation of the element in SmartView
Of course, RealLiveViews™ would be the best resolution.

I have a worksheet tab for Plans and one for Elevations. In Plans worksheet tab I want the roof lines to be dashed. In Elevations worksheet tab I want the roof lines to be continuous. The way I control this is using the 'model view / export / export layer set up', and reload my plans.lay or elevations.lay depending on which one I'm printing.
The issue then is by reloading the .lay file in model tab, the worksheet layer properties change automatically. The result is layers such as 'doors' jump from desired 'default' to undesired 'medium' line weight. I only want doors to be 'default' line weight for all worksheets.

Jack's comment suggests to me not using 'export layer setup' for worksheet properties and there may be a better way. How would you go about it Jack?
Thanks, Tom

G'day Tom!
If you're using v7 there's no need to go to that trouble.
http://www.cadsoft.com/v7.php & expand the BIM section  . . .

A new 2D roof component has been added to the roof object to display the representation in plan view independently from the elevation view.  Now roof line styles, colors and weights can be designated independently in plan view and elevation views.  This allows you to insert SmartViews and have more control over your drawing appearance after views are inserted.
You can now assign a 2D Plan linetype separate to the Roof Surface linetype.
Here's an Elevation SmartView that was inserted immediately after the  2D Plan Smartview. No fudging, fiddling, doctoring required. If you want roof lines in elevation to be Heavy while roof lines in plan are Light & Dashed, set that in Layers Library Manager & forget it.

G'day again Tom!
I should have added that prior to v7 I found it most efficient for all roof lines to export onto layer Roof which used a continuous linetype. Then in 2D plans (floor plans & site plans mostly) I'd just change the roof entities to layer Roof-2D which was dashed or hidden.
This method also works well should you work for an architect who insists that roof planes further away in elevations should be defined (& hatched) in a "lighter pen". Simple as changing them to predefined layers Roof2, Roof3 . .

Hi Merv,
I see from the above you are using export layer setup as well for worksheet line control (or do I have that wrong). If so, do you find changing the .lay file in Model Tab inadvertantly changes the layer colours & line weights of some objects in Worksheet tab? I'm beginning to think export layer setup should not be touched while working in worksheet tab.

G'day Tom!
Once I got it setup the way I liked I've not had to use it again, except when v7 provided the additional option for roofs in 2D. So I can't say that I've noticed.

I'd agree with that.

Hello Everyone

When Envisioneer takes a model from model view and converts it to lines in worksheet view, it looks at the Export Layer setup table to see what model element should go to what layer in that tranfer. So if you want specific lines/layers for objects when they get transferred to sheets, you set up that relation in the table. File>Export>Export Layer Setup. This is where you SHOULD set up the relation and you can create new layers in this table too.

This Layer setup table is saved in your template file. So if you start a brand new drawing, it will look at the table saved in your template. Tom, I think this is what has happened to you. You probably set up a great table in one project and then started a new project to see that it defaulted back to the original table- which was set in the template file.

No fear, there is a solution. In the Export Layer Setup table you will see, in the upper right corner "Load" and "Saveas". In the model where you setup the table originally, go there and "Saveas" and give it a name. In your template file, and in the new project you are working on, "Load" that table. Now they will all look at the same Export Layer Setup table and transfer your 3D model to the lines/colours/layers you want.
