I usually E-mail my clients PDF's of their drawings. Has anyone found a good PDF compression program on line?
Thank you, Tom

Hi Tom,

Not sure what you mean by PDF compressor... but I have used Desk PDF for years (in fact have never updated). Most all PDF files from it are less than 250 kb when generating a set of Working Drawings.

Let me know if it looks like it was what you were looking for please.

G'day Tom!
You should be able to set compression & resolution in the printer properties.
Which programme do you use?

Right now I use PDF995. I don't see any place to adjust compression or resolution. My website people found the PDF995 files too large for viewers to download (up to 5mb for a complex sheet), so they compressed the PDF files on their end - up to 70% compression with minimal change in resolution. That started me thinking on compressing the files myself for E-mailing.

Jack, thanks for the tip on docudesk. I'll check into it and let you know. /Tom

Sorry, I'm editing this message as I get more results from various PDF printers AND learn how to minimize the size:

Using a file size with Arch D sheet and 300 DPI, I get PDF sizes as follows:
PDF995 ..................... 3.93 mb
deskPDF..................... 1.46 mb
CutePDF .................... 1.48 mb
BlackIcePDF ............... 3.5 mb, 2min file print time, 100dpi
Adobe Acrobat X Pro ... 2.3 mb

Morning Tom,

Why don't you just "ZIP" it? Will take all the other hassles away!

Hi Stephan,

Zipping PDF files runs only around 2% compression. Thanks for the input anyway. I think I'll check with my website people and see what they used.

I think I'll be changing from pdf995 to deskPDF for the writer - thanks for the tip Jack. In addition I'm going to add further PDF compression with Pdfcompressor Pro 5.0 . That should get things down to 70 kb range. /Tom.

Hey Tom!
Why not save time & money?
Merv swears by pdfMachine  http://www.cadsoft.com/forum/index.php/topic,6623.0.html & I've found it does everything I want. You can change resolution & compression settings in the print driver on the fly.
For example, an A3 sheet full of text (approx the size of 2 Letter portrait sheets side by side) with coloured title block prints as follows:
Best Quality & 1440dpi yielded a pdf of 6.4MB
Low quality & 96dpi resulted in a pdf of 340KB
I'd use the first file for printing a proposal but the 2nd would be for emailing or upload to a website.

http://www.broadgun.com/ is an Aussie outfit but they price in greenbacks. I'd suggest you try their basic pdfMachine Office. If it does what you want it'll only set you back US$29
Don't ask me why us Aussies pay a premium - currently 29.00 USD    =    27.4322 AUD but if I wanted to buy a 2nd licence now they hit me AU$33.35
go figure!

That's not going to happen but we can dream, can't we?
Like Wayne I also dream of Merv's dreams coming true - the versatility of Envisioneer + power of AP = happy camper
