I bought a new PC, with Windows Home 64 bit. I understand I need Windows 7 Pro to be able to run XP with Build. I am wondering - if I buy Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, and install Windows XP 32 bit, will Build 7.2 work? Or does Windows 7 Pro ALSO need to be in 32 bit? How does a PC with 4gb RAM run using Build in XP virtual mode? Does switching back to Windows 7 for other programs cause any issues with Build open in XP mode? Cheers

Get Win7x64, iirc you then install XPmode (free download from MS) then VirtualPC (another free download) Been moving house so haven't got my desktop running yet (& a thunderstorm killed my UPS on Tuesday) but iirc Build just sits on the desktop as if it had been installed in Win7. How does a PC with 4gb RAM run using Build in XP virtual mode? Does switching back to Windows 7 for other programs cause any issues with Build open in XP mode? You can configure XPmode to use as little as 512MB RAM iirc but you might find that a bit slow. A case of trial & error to find a satisfactory balance. However, with x64 you could up the RAM to 8GB (prices are still quite attractive) & still use all of it, wheras 32bit there's no point increasing RAM. I've not used it much in the last 12 months but don't recall any issues/conflicts (software for the UPS had to run in XPmode so once insurance pays up that'll make life easier still) What other programmes do you normally have running while using Build? Merv

Oh ok, that's good news! I wonder if I should take the PC back to the compute store Monday and get a new install done, or just purchase an upgrade key online? I do chop and change with other programs such as Photoshop and Envisioneer at times, which woul be 64 bit. Would these work ok with 4gb RAM? This forum is great, you are so fast to reply! I greatly appreciate it I am wondering - if I buy Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, and install Windows XP 32 bit, will Build 7.2 work? Or does Windows 7 Pro ALSO need to be in 32 bit? If you do any serious Shopping you'll find 4GB frustrating. (unless you shut XPmode b4 going into Photoshop) Merv

Oh really? Damn, I poked the PC up just today, and am pretty sure it is 2x 2gb sticks - would need 2x 4gb as there's only 2 slots. Will see how I go anyway.
Cheers :-)
EDIT it has 4 slots actually, so should be able to get 8gb or more. Will do that once all set up.

Well I upgraded to Windows Pro, installed XP Mode, installed Build and I can't get it to recognise the hardware lock number.
Any suggestions?
I was hoping to have this up and running again by Monday, just banging my head against a wall now though!

Well I upgraded to Windows Pro, installed XP Mode, installed Build and I can't get it to recognise the hardware lock number. I assume you installed the latest HASP drivers, rather than take the option given at the end of installing from CD? I was hoping to have this up and running again by Monday, just banging my head against a wall now though! Gently does it! Is it a brick wall or padded? If it's padded you know you've already gone round the bend. I think mine's padded! I have a mate & former employee in California. For the last 6 weeks his ISP (sbcglobal.net) has been blocking mail from my ISP's server Apparently they just work off a blacklist provided by others so I tried setting up another account that would use a different smtp server but looks like I have to edit about:config in SeaMonkey to have the option of using a 2nd smtp server available when I send. I spent hours wading through a stack of documentation then Helpdesk suggested I try using their securemail server. So I'm sending a few test msgs & hope I don't get any Delay or Failure Notifications in the morning when I check my mail. (seems they delay it for about 5 days then say it can't be delivered because it was "too old") Merv

Be patient, it's 10.3MB zipped - command line install so run cmd (within XPmode) then run hdd32 Wrong! hinstall.exe iirc if you type hdd32 hinstall.exe /? you'll get a list of switches my head hurts at the thought of going back to DOS Merv
later, should be in your Inbox now laterstill, corrected the installer's file name

just remembered - in XPmode prior to starting Build you have to specifically tell XPmode to attach your dongle. There's a USB pulldown menu with an option to "attach device" iirc (really need to get the desktop up & running so I can post illustrations) Merv

Ok, got the email - thanks :-)
So which switches do I use when installing?
And when clicking on XP Mode within my Windows 7 taskbar, there is no option to manage USB devices. Mybe once installed it might show up? Is there a way to automatically attach the dongle every time?
EDIT- got Build working, thanks so much. Have to attach printer and done each time, but up and running at least :-)

One last question Merv (or anybody else) do you know any reason why I would be seeing the arrow cursor as well as the Build crosshairs, when within Build? Maybe I am going crazy, but I didn't think in the past that pointer was also there, just the crosshairs alone? It seems in XP mode that I now have both pointers there - and my new wireless mouse which has some annoying lag (another story) really shows a gap between the 2 pointers and it is annoying me. Cheers
